ZAMBOANGA'S 4-H Club bagged the first prize in the National Demonstration
Contest on Agri-livestock based by-products during the recently concluded
National 4-H Club Annual convention held in Tacloban City.
Rowel Lumangtad, 4-H club member from Quiniput bested the almost 20 other
entries from different parts of the country in the coco-based handicraft contest
with his entry "hand-made coco spade paper making."
Lumangtad with Johanna Paula Perez of Tugbungan 4-H club also ranked 5th in the
dance sport competition (chacha, rumba, jive), national level. At the regional
level competition held earlier, the duo was adjudged first placer.
Zamboanga also bagged two other major prizes in the GAWAD Saka National Search.
Edwin Francisco, 4-H member of Mampang, was adjudged 5th placer in the
Outstanding Young Farmer Award Search while Rey O. Famat, fishpond operator of
Tugbungan, was adjudged 2nd placer in the Outstanding Fisherfolk Award Search.
The demonstration contest is part of the National 4-H club convention being held
annually. The contest involves three categories- hybrid rice: One Dish Meal,
Chevon Cooking Contest, and the Coco-based Handicraft Contest.
Lumangtad, Perez, and two other 4-H club members who won in the regional
competitions paid a courtesy call on Mayor Celso Lobregat Tuesday morning to
inform the chief executive about their feats.
They were accompanied by City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat, Councilor Rey
Candido--who is chairman of the Council committee on agriculture, and 4-H Club
coordinators Bella Esperancilla and Lorna Bautista.
Lumangtad presented to Mayor Lobregat as a souvenir a sample of his entry-a
utility box, made of coco-spade paper.
Lobregat expressed elation over the achievement of the Zamboanga 4-H club hoping
other youths would emulate the examples of the young achievers. 4-H club is an
organization of children of Zamboanga farmers with the objective of fostering
growth and developments in agriculture, agro-processing, home economics,
leadership and social skills among young people.
The two other 4-H club members who won in the Regional Level competition held
during the Regional 4-H Club convention were Princess Bautista of Recodo with
