Filipino Weed Cures Denque Fever:
The old barangay folks know the value of this weed. They smoke it. They drink its juice. They use the entire plant as poultice. In the Philippines the leaves are mixed with Datura metel leaves and flowers in the preparation of "asthma-cigarettes". Father Alzina reports that the latex is prescribed in asthma. According to Guerrero, the entire plant is used as an antidote, being considered haemostatic, sedative and soporific. Read on...

Ancient History of Zamboanga:
In the beginning, there was Jambangan (not Samboangan, as others might insist - it came later as a Spanish inflection to their pronunciation) the ancient place that was settled in the 1200s by the Subanons, who are considered by historians to be the founding fathers of the place they called the “Land of Flowers.” (interesting historical note: The mainland of the North American continent was first sighted by the Spanish explorer and treasure hunter Don Juan Ponce de Leon on Easter, March 27, 1513. He claimed the land for Spain and named it La Florida, meaning "Land of Flowers".). Read on...

History of Zamboanga - circa 1500s:
The early 1500s brought along the Spaniards and their Catholic religion into the Philippine Islands, in search of spices and riches. The Spanish's recorded presence in Jambangan can be dated as far back as November 1596, when a small Spanish settlement and garrison was established in the port of La Caldera, the present-day Caldera Bay area barrio called Recodo, located about fifteen miles north-east of present downtown Zamboanga City.. History of Zamboanga - circa 1900s:

With the presence and administration of the American conquerors, Zamboanga was made the capital of the Moro province, encompassing the island of Mindanao and other nearby islands. Pasonanca Tree House
Arts and Culture of Zamboanga City, Philippines. Zamboanga City's Art history spans a period of over 500 years, with heavy influence coming from the Malay and Spanish culture early on, and the West more recently. Countless, and quite priceless, artifacts dating back to over a thousand years have been excavated in the early 1900s by American archaeologists during their occupation of the Philippines in the vicinities of Zamboanga and Mindanao. Many of these artifacts are currently housed in "vaults" of some major U.S. universities, inaccessible to the general public. Just recently, a few Filipino scholars stumbled upon some of these extracted art works at a U.S. university, and have been trying to gain more access and possible return of the pieces. Although that wish may be futile, we can start with what we have today. Let us not allow history to repeat itself. Each and everyone of us has the means to make a difference, no matter how small the contribution. We will present all relative entries we receive and others that we discover. Read On...

Barangays of Zamboanga City, Philippines. The Philippines' self-governing system before the Spanish inquisition was based on a myriad of groups of people scattered throughout the populated islands, mostly ruled by a tribal leader. These groups of people were called “Barangays“, a Malay term for community.

History of Zamboanga

Zamboanga - historically known as "the place of flowers".

1635 - 2009: 374 Years of Our Storied History

History of Zamboanga City, Philippines. The principal peoples of the Philippine archipelago were the Negritos, proto-Malays, and Malays. The Negritos are believed to have migrated by land bridges some 30,000 years ago, during the last glacial period. Later migrations were by water and took place over several thousand years in repeated movements before and after the start of the Christian era.2 Not much is known of the early inhabitants of the Mindanao Island peninsula during this time line.  Although Western time line puts Philippine history in accordance to their discovery of the islands, this short-sighted view point cannot erase the factual history of the people who discovered and inhabited the islands long before the western world arrived.  The barangay method of government of these peoples, in use for over a thousand years, was the biggest dividing line between their nation of small enclaves and the present geographically defined country that is The Philippines. Chavacano Hisotory of Zamboanga City, Philippines June 23, 1635 should be symbolically known as “Dia del Chavacano de Zamboanga.” Why you might ask? This was the day that a permanent foothold was laid on Zamboanga by the Spanish government with the construction of the San José Fort, and the subsequent evolution and proliferation of a unique dialect/language based on ancient Creole Spanish that is called Chavacano de Zamboanga. This is our history, this is our culture… Read On...

Islands of Zamboanga City, Philippines. In addition to the main land territory of Zamboanga City, which encompasses 1,681 kilometers ( 645 square mile ), there are (officially) 28 islands that are part of its principality, and all of them are now named. The most popular of these islands is the Great Santa Cruz Island, and most deservedly so. Its tantalizingly beautiful scenery encompasses the rare "pink sand" ( a coloration effect of white sand mixed with red coral sand ), crystal clear blue water, and the symphony of varied living corals, abundant colorful tropical sea life, and island vegetation. It is truly a wonderland.
