Zamboanga City Council: Are They Public Dictators or Corporate Directors?
By: Zamboanga.com Editorial - January 11, 2003
It is evident to us, and many cognizant Zamboangueños, that the Zamboanga City Council has lost it meaning and purpose of legal governance. They have lost any credibility they may have had, or have been clinging on to, as a result of their recent actions.
In the immortal words of their public front man philosopher, City Councilor Juan "Kim" Elago:
| "The People of Zamboanga, as an entity or collective body, is not the City Government, and vice-versa. The City Government is not the people of Zamboanga! The City Government is a corporate entity, and does not necessarily mean that it is the people of Zamboanga!" |
This sort of hogwash blabber is reflective of a very dangerous mindset, reminiscent of what former dictator Marcos would be inclined to dish out to the poor citizens he and his cronies abused.
If the Mayor of Zamboanga City does not go on record to the public announcing her stance on councilor Kim Elago's public statement above, then she can be considered an accomplice to this dangerous conspiracy.
We hope Malacañang Palace has gotten word of councilor Kim Elago's public statement and instructed its Department of Justice representatives to investigate this ominous conspiracy. Que horror!
Councilor Kim Elago's preposterous equation of his being a "corporate director" of the people of Zamboanga City and their constitutional government is a sign that he, as an elected public official, and his fellow elected councilmen, have lost any semblance of constitutional governance of the City of Zamboanga and its Chavacano people!
It is quite scary to be publicly educated by councilor Kim Elago on what the legal meaning of Zamboanga City's charter entails. We did not realize that the city's legal charter was subject to re-interpretation by the city council, and molded to conform to their selfish and self-aggrandizing interpretation! This is an historical attainment!
Councilor Kim Elago enlightened us all on the fact that Zamboanga City is NOT "a government of the people, by the people, and for the people."
Councilor Kim Elago also stated publicly in Chavacano that: "Kame el ta dicidi, hende maga gente!" In translation, it means: "We are the ones who make decisions, not the people!"
May God help him and the others who share in his beliefs. Zamboanga City deserves better governance from its elected public officials.
We hope The Philippine government's Department of Justice can assist the people of Zamboanga City in fixing this flawed logic of their city council, and help bring back responsible government to this tattered city that once stood for vigilant democracy.
