Agusan del Norte is a third class province and the second smallest in the Caraga Region. It is mountainous along its northeastern and western parts. In between are flat, rolling lands particularly where the Agusan River cuts through as it empties into Butuan Bay. Its crystal –clear waters that sparkle with the bright reflection of the sun and verdant landscapes, enchanting caves, pear-shaped lake, multi-tiered waterfalls are great gateaways that await you.

Agusan del Norte is bounded on the north by Butuan Bay and Surigao del Norte, on the east by Surigao del Sur, on the south by Agusan del Sur and on the west by Misamis Oriental.

Butuan City is the regional center of the Caraga Region in the Philippines. It is located at the northeastern part of Agusan Valley Mindanao, sprawling across the Agusan River. It is bounded to the north, west and south by Agusan del Norte, to the east by Agusan del Sur and to the northwest by Butuan Bay.

Flat and rolling lands characterized much of Agusan del Norte. Surrounded by mountains at the northwestern and southeastern fronts, the sea embraces valleys at its mid portion that runs in triangular form from the west and comprises the plains fronting Butuan Bay on the east. Lording over this landmass in term of elevation is the 2,012 meters Mt. Hilong-hilong in Cabadbaran, part of Diwata Mountain Range as its northeastern boundary with the province of Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur that stand as watershed to Caraga Region’s major rivers. History of Agusan del Norte, Philippines

Agusan Province was named after a Malay word Agasan, meaning, “where water flows”, probably because of the mighty river that traverses the whole area. Early immigrants from Borneo and Celebes came to the region in Balanghai or wooden boats. Nine such boats were excavated. One dates back to 320 A.D. The Malay settlers drove the aborigines, called Mamanwas, to the hinterlands.

By the time the Spaniards arrived, the natives were already trading with foreign merchants, as attested by 10th-century Chinese ceramics unearthed near Butuan. Some historians claim that Magellan held the first mass in the Philippines at the mouth of the Agusan River, and not in Limasawa, Leyte, on Easter Sunday, of 1521. Agusan was part of Surigao province during the Spanish colonial administration. By virtue of R.A. 1306 during the American regime, it became the independent province of Agusan. On June 17, 1967, Congress passed R.A. 4979 dividing the lone province into Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur.

Butuan City, which was then a component city of Agusan del Norte, used to be the capital and seat of government. That ended in 2000 when congress passed Republic Act 8811 making Cabadbaran as the new capital and administrative center of the province that year.

Natural Resources of Agusan del Norte, Philippines

The province has significant deposits of metallic and non-metallic resources such as gold, manganese, copper, and construction and decorative materials. These mineral prospects can play a role in the economic development of the province if they are properly extracted. The mining industry can even significantly contribute to the foreign exchange earnings of the country.

Agusan del Norte’s mineral resources are located mainly in the municipalities of Nasipit, RTR, Kitcharao, Cabadbaran, Jabonga, Tubay and Santiago. It is reported that an area of 10.5 hectares in Nasipit have bauxite ore; 112.9 hectares in RTR have manganese; and 178.9 hectares in Kitcharao have marbleized limestone. The DENR also estimated gold deposits of about 1,566.14 MT in Tubay and 75,000 MT in Cabadbaran. Copper deposits are also said to exist in Cabadbaran, Jabonga, Santiago and Tubay while San Antonio in R.T.R. and Cabadbaran are likewise manganese areas. The province’s mineral resources are still largely untapped.

Non-metallic resources such as limestone, marble, guano, sand, gravel and construction materials are also abundant. The Marapot and Cabadbaran Rivers are the best-known sources of Class A sand and gravel.

There are possibilities for hydrocarbon or natural gas deposits in the coastal plains of Magallanes. Low-pressure natural gas seepages have been found in Magallanes Poblacion, while low-pressure natural gas utilization has been established at Barangay Caloc-an. Methaniferous gas emanations occur up to the mouth of Agusan River due perhaps to the faults that release the gas from underground deposits.

Let us plant more trees in every barangay in the entire Philippines. It does not make any difference if the barangay is urban, partially urban or rural; we need more trees. The Philippines is a tropical country and practically anything will grow. The DENR has the planting trees project that goes on every year. Lots of picture taking for the media. Planting trees one by one is the "human" way of doing it. This individual planting of trees is good if done to "line" the roads and highways with trees or along fences or property divisions, or if you have a plantation.

To reforest the nation of the Philippines we have to plant trees the "mother nature" way. Sow the seeds during the rainy season. Go deep into "bald" forests and plant trees by sowing seeds. If there's not enough volunteers to do this, use the military helicopters to fly over the designated areas and sow the seeds.

We are using our rivers as our sewer system. If you ask a Filipino, "Are the Filipinos a clean people?" The answer is an automatic, "Yes!". However, the Filipinos are suffering from the same disease or attitude as most people do, and that is the "NIMBY" disease or "NIMBY" attitude. (NIMBY) Not In My Back Yard. So it is OK to dump my garbage and sewer there. Not mine! Someone else will take care of it.

This attitude is killing our rivers. Your great-grandparents, grandparents or parents were once proud to tell the stories of how they enjoyed swimming in the river behind your house or nearby. However, you can't say the same or tell the same stories to your kids or grand kids. Why? Because your generation is killing the river.

  1. Lake Mainit:Situated 80 ft. above sea level with a mean depth of 128 meter, the lake is a confluence of 28 rivers. Its area of 17,430 hectares with a total shoreline of 50 kilometers covers part of Agusan del Norte (Jabonga, Kitcharao, Santiago) and Surigao del Norte (Mainit,Alegria and Sison). It is known for its pidjanga, gabot, banak, haw-an, gi-ngaw,igi and kasili and is natural habitat to some endangered Philippine flora and fauna. Migratory birds from Russia and Japan and native flowers –pagosi and tabukali are its unique attractions.
  2. Kalinawan River :Declared as Caraga’s cleanest inland body of water, this 29.1 kilometer of pristine and picturesque river is Lake Mainit’s only outlet. It passes through the municipalities of Jabonga, Santiago, Tubay before it finally empties into Butuan bay. By history, it is one of the oldest trading and missionary routes in the Philippines. Its historical past (part of the Old Kingdom of Butuan even predates Philippine history. The river is fishing ground to the mamanwas since immemorial. The mamanwa tribe who inhabits around the lake and this river is the oldest indigenous tribe of the Philippines.
  3. Mt. Hilong-hilong, 2,012 meter above sea level: Straddling over the eastern portion of Cabadbaran and RTR is Agusan del Norte and Caraga’s highest peak. Seven major waterfalls, an ancient rock art, a carpet of giant white anthuriums, still undetermined number of virgin caves, nesting site of the critically endangered Philippine Eagle, habitat of the Philippine wildcat, flying squirrel, tarsier , and microscopic flower not found anywhere else in the Philippines (German botanist circa 1920) are just some of its main features. By degree of difficulty, it is recommended to climbers with intermediate and expert skills only. A climb to the peak via Malvar Trail takes 4 ½ to 5 days. This mystical mountain was venue to the 17th national MFPI mid-year climb in 2002.
  4. Mt. Mabaho,1,823 meters above sea level. Besides being Caraga’s second highest peak, it is also the K2 of Mindanao. Its massive peak of wet solid rock rising acutely to 80-90 degree angle makes it almost impossible to climb without gears. Except for a native “gamhanan” of old, according to legend no one has yet conquered its peak to this day. Known to natives as “Panlabaw” it is an intriguing destination for experienced mountaineers, technical climbers and extreme adventurers. Location : Santiago
  5. Mt. Mas-ai, 1,680 meter above sea level: Located at Brgy. Del Pilar, Cabadbaran is another high peak. Among its features is Lake Balwang. It is negotiable in 3 days. It was venue to MFPI’s Mindanao in 1997.
  6. Mt. Mayapay, 675 meters above sea level: Occupying part of Butuan and Buenavista, this mountain is closely associated with the Higa-onon tribe. It is the most accessible climbing destination from Butuan City. It is negotiable in a day and is a perfect fun climb destination.

Festivals, Fiestas and Traditions of Agusan del Norte, Philippines

  • Baoto Festival: Held annually every June 13-15. This is an island race for dug-out canoes, the main event of which is the 30k Baoto Marathon – the longest paddling race in the Philippines. Other events are: the 150 meter double slalom (men /women, boys / girls; and the 75 meter single sprint –men/women, boys/girls. Side activities include: a BMC clinic; SRT clinic, Paddling Clinic, Arnis Demonstration; and Water Rescue Demonstration.
  • Sumayajaw Festival: Held every August 14 during the town fiesta of Jabonga, is a thanksgiving celebration for the bounties showered by the Heavenly Father through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Lady of Assumpcion – patroness of Jabonga.
  • Lisagan Festival: Held every 3rd Sunday of October is an annual celebration that showcases the Mamanwa dance healing rituals. It is a re-enactment of a miraculous healing of a Mamanwa native in 1910 while dancing in front of the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This statue was brought to Magallanes from Las Nieves, Barcelona Spain.
  • Araw ng Agusan del Norte: This is a founding anniversary celebration of the Province of Agusan del Norte every June 13-17. Activities: Trade Exhibit; State of the Province Address; Barangay Night; Employees Day; Peoples Day; Inter-Agency Sports Competition; Concert at the Park; Choral Competitions; Flatboat Race and a national 4 x 4 Race.

Kaya Iloilo sweeps Group B in Copa '21

MANILA – Kaya Iloilo pipped Mendiola with a 6-0 beating on Wednesday night to complete a sweep of Group B action in the Copa Paulino Alcantara at the PFF National Training Centre in Carmona.

A Jovin Bedic brace in the first half set the tone for the inaugural tournament champ even as the club netted three goals in each of the two halves to seal the top seed in its group ahead of the semifinals next week.

Bedic capitalized on an erroneous Mendiola attempt to keep the ball out of his reach and quickly raced inside the penalty box to open the scoring for Kaya Iloilo in the 11th minute.

OWWA-Caraga intensifies education program of OFW dependents

BUTUAN CITY- The Overseas Workers’ Welfare Administration (OWWA) in Caraga is strengthening the education program of the children of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) in the region.

In a press conference on Tuesday held in time with the 30th anniversary of OWWA, Dr. Marietta Lumawag, OWWA-Caraga Regional Director emphasized the need to strengthen the education of the children of OFWs.

The official said because of this, a memorandum of agreement was signed between OWWA-Caraga and eight local government units (LGUs) of the region, as well as some 12 academic institutions to ensure that whatever assistance needed by the students will be properly addressed.

Lumawag stressed the establishment of OWWA help desk in the said LGUs academic institutions highlighted in the agreement.

“It is really our desire to help the children of the OFWs who are studying in the academic institutions in the region as they were left behind by their parents who are working abroad,” Lumawag said.

Meanwhile, OWWA Administrator Carmelita Dimzon graced and personally witnessed the agreement signing of the three parties.

In her speech, Dimzon said the initiative of OWWA-Caraga is the first to be implemented in all the regional welfare offices in the country.

“I am so overwhelmed of what OWWA-Caraga has accomplished… This is also the reason why I personally visited and celebrate the 30th anniversary of OWWA… I also want to witness how the program was implemented in the region… hopefully this will be replicated in other regions,” she said.

The OWWA chief also expressed gratitude for the support of the LGUs and the academic institutions for the success of the program. She said there is a need for the government to partner with public and private stakeholders for the development of the students who are children of OFWs.

“We in the government cannot do the development alone… we need the support of stakeholders especially in the LGUs and academe to put our plans and programs in place,” Administrator Dimzon said.

Accordingly, school administrators and guidance counselors have already expressed appreciation and welcomed this step as a timely response to address the special needs of the OFW’s children.

Present during the MOA-signing are Governor Johnny Pimentel of the Province of Surigao del Sur; Butuan City Mayor Ferdinand Amante, Jr.; Nasipit, Agusan del Norte Mayor Rosco Democrito Plaza; and Agusan del Sur municipal mayors Jenny de Asis of San Francisco; Prosperidad Mayor Albin Magdamit; Esperanza Mayor Leonida Manpatilan; Lapaz Mayor Ambrosio Lim; and Loreto Mayor Romeo Magadan.

Also present in the event are school administrators of Father Saturnino Urios University, Caraga State University, Saint Joseph Institute of Technology, Agusan National High School, Southern Technical Institute of the Philippines, De La Salle-John Bosco College, Andres Soriano College, Saint Michael College of Caraga, Saint James National High School, Carmen Academy, Saint Paul University-Surigao City Campus, and Philippine Normal University-Agusan del Sur Campus.

Philippine Cycling is about cycling in the Philippnes. Philippine Cycling helps promote bike races, cycling clubs, bicycle tours, and the development of bicycle trails. Activities are coordinated with bike shops and cycling clubs throughout the Philippines to promote the fun of riding bikes. Philippine Cycling will be coordinating events with tour of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Road biking and mountain bikings will be promoted by Philippine Cycling.
