Geography and Topography of Cagayan, Philippines

Cagayan is a vast bio-diverse expanse of plains and valleys, bordered by mountains, running north to south both on its east and west ramparts. It is crisscrossed by rivers and creeks, the largest of which is the Cagayan River, which originates from Quirino, and traverses the Province from south to north. The larger tributaries of the Cagayan River are the Pinacanauan River in Peñablanca in the southeast; the Dummun River in Gattaran and the Pared River in Alcala, both in central Cagayan; and the Zinundungan River in Lasam and the Matalag River in Rizal, both in the west. The other rivers in the Province are the Chico River in southwest Cagayan at Tuao, the Pata River and Abulug River in the northwest, River in the northeast. These rivers drain the plains and valleys of the Province, and provide water for domestic and irrigation purposes, as well.

Of its total land area, 28.19% or 253,831 hectares are flat to nearly level land (See Slope Classification Table). This consists of alluvial plains, river deltas, low wetlands, mangroves, and beaches. Most of these are found contiguous to the bodies of water, especially along the Cagayan, Pared, Dummun, Pinacanauan, Abulug, and Chico rivers. These areas are planted to rice and corn, and are inundated during the wet season. The gentle and moderate slopes of the province, which constitute 6.08% and 13.48%, respectively of the total land area of the province are mostly contiguous to the level land, enclosing the plains of the meandering rivers and creeks. Location of Cagayan, Philippines

Cagayan occupies the northeastern tip of the Philippines, bounded bythe Batanes Islands on the north, thePhilippine Sea (Pacific Ocean) on the east, Isabela Province on the south, and the Cordillera mountain ranges on the west, Cagayan has a total land area of 9,002.70 sq. km. It is just about 480 kilometers north of Manila. It is strategically located near the growing tigers of South East Asia like Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea and even Hong Kong and Japan. It is about 2,730 kilometers south west of Tokyo, Japan or only 570 kilometers south of Kaoshiung, Taiwan.

History of Cagayan, Philippines

Cagayan has a prehistoric civilization with rich and diverse culture. According to archeologists, the earliest man in the Philippines probably lived in Cagayan thousands of years ago. Evidences to this effect are now convincing beyond scientific doubt to consider it as an incontestable fact.

From available evidences, the Atta or Negrito - a short dark-skinned nomad - was the first man in Cagayan. They were later moved to the uplands by the Indo-Malays who eventually became the Ybanag, Ytawit, Yogad, Gaddang, Yraya and Malaweg - the natives of Cagayan - who actually came from one ethnicity. These are the people found by the Spaniards in the different villages along the rivers all over Cagayan. The Spaniards rightly judged that these various villagers came from single racial stock and decided to make the Ybanag Tongue the lingua franca, both civilly and ecclesiastically for the entire people of Cagayan which they called collectively as the Cagayanes which later was transliterated to become Cagayanos.

Even before the Spaniards came to Cagayan, the Cagayanos have already made contact with various civilizations like the Chinese, Japanese and even Indians, as evidenced by various artifacts and even the presence of foreign linguistic elements in the languages of the natives.

Various other racial strains, like the Ilocanos, Tagalogs, Visayans, Muslims, Pangasinenses, Kapampangans, and even foreigners like the Chinese, Japanese, Spaniards and others were further infused to the native Cagayanes to become the modern Cagayano that we know today. It was only in 1583 that Cagayan began to be called a Province through a Spanish Royal Decree which originally comprises the whole of northeastern Luzon plus the islands in the Balintang Channel. This means that the present Provinces of Batanes, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, and even portions of the Province of Kalinga and Apayao were part of the original territorial delineation of the Province of Cagayan. It was called La Provincia de Cagayan. It is protected on its eastern side by the Sierra Madre Mountain Range, on its western side by the Cordillera, and on its southern side by the Caraballo Range - making it a large Valley Province. The establishment of the civil government of Cagayan through the 1583 Spanish Royal Decree is commemorated in the yearly Aggao Nac Cagayan celebrations of the Provincial Government of Cagayan and its people.

The Province of Cagayan is no longer the sole owner of this original vast territory - that was the La Provincia de Cagayan. Its daughter-provinces Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya and even Batanes, Kalinga and Apayao have already claimed their rightful parcels. Today, only 9,002.70 square kilometers remain of the former vastness of Cagayan. The Province of Cagayan is currently comprised of 28 municipalities and one component city, which is also its capital, that is Tuguegarao City. People of Cagayan, Philippines

As of 2010 The Province of Cagayan has a total population of approximately 1,111,045 which gives an overall population density of about 123 people per square kilometer.

English and Filipino are widely used and spoken in Cagayan. Predominant local languages are Ilocano, Ybanag, Ytawes and Malaueg. Pangasinense, Maranao and other dialects are also used in some areas where migrants abound.

Majority of the Cagayanos can speak at least two of the local languages and have good command, or at least a working knowledge, of the English language.

As of 2010, majority of the households are "Ilocanos" which constitutes 68.40% of the total populace. The natives of Cagayan which are the "Ibanags", "Itawes", and "Malawegs" contitute 17.30%, 8.9%, and 1.40%, respectively. Migrant "Tagalogs" constitutes 2.60% and "Ifugaos", "Kalingas", "Pampangos", "Cebuanos", "Pangasinenses", "Ilongos", "Bicolanos", and others constitute the remaining 1.4% of the populace.

Due to the influx of Ilokano migrants in the last century, majority of the people of Cagayan speak Iloko as their primary tongue. Aside from the Ilokanos, there are several smaller ethnic groups that live in the province. The Ybanags are the dominant ethnic group in the vicinity of the provincial capital of Cagayan-—Tuguegarao, now a city. The closely related Itawits inhabit the Pinacanauan River valley as well as areas of Amulung and Tuao. The Malawegs are found mainly in the municipality of Rizal . In the foothills and the mountains of the Sierra Madre Range , several Negrito groups called the Agtas forage and hunt for food. The established lingua franca of the province is Ybanag.

The Ybanags, Itawits and Malawegs are mainly lowland farmers whose agricultural practices are similar to those of the Ilokanos. The Ybanags used to inhabit the area along the Cagayan coast but migrated further inland. They conducted trade with neighboring areas using distinctive seacrafts, and their commercial interests made their language the medium of commerce throughout the region before the influx of Ilokano migrants. They are also excellent blacksmiths and continue to make good bolos. The Ybanags are reputed to be the tallest of all the ethno-linguistic groups in the Philippines . The Itawits are almost indistinguishable from the Ybanags. They build their houses with separate kitchens, connected by a narrow walkway that is used as washing area for hands and feet. The Itawits are noted for their pottery and basket-weaving traditions.

The culture of Cagayan is showcased in museums, historical buildings and archeological sites spread across the province. In Solana, the Neolithic archeological sites in Lanna have yielded stone tools used as early as 20,000 years back. The Cabarruan jar burial site, also in the town, features ancient Filipino traditions of taking care of their dead. The Cagayan Museum is a repository of the province´s cultural heritage. Iron Age pottery, Chinese Ming and Sung dynasty porcelain pieces as well as Church paraphernalia are on display together with Paleolithic fossils. The oldest bell in the country, cast in 1592, still peals from the tower of the church in Camalaniugan. The old brick works in Tuguegarao lie inside the city and speak of a time when bricks were extensively used to build the beautiful churches of the Cagayan. We are using our rivers as our sewer system. If you ask a Filipino, "Are the Filipinos a clean people?" The answer is an automatic, "Yes!". However, the Filipinos are suffering from the same disease or attitude as most people do, and that is the "NIMBY" disease or "NIMBY" attitude. (NIMBY) Not In My Back Yard. So it is OK to dump my garbage and sewer there. Not mine! Someone else will take care of it.

Cagayan, Philippines supports Philippine Cycling

Philippine Cycling is about cycling in the Philippnes. Philippine Cycling helps promote bike races, cycling clubs, bicycle tours, and the development of bicycle trails. Activities are coordinated with bike shops and cycling clubs throughout the Philippines to promote the fun of riding bikes. Philippine Cycling will be coordinating events with tour of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Road biking and mountain bikings will be promoted by Philippine Cycling.
Cycling Activity to Participate In

Tour de Zamboanga 2013: From the 11th of July, 2013 to the 14th of July, 2013. A four day 540 kilometer bicycle race for Charity!

Due to the road constructions going on in the route of the Tour, we are eliminating the road bikes from this race.
  • This is a (Non-Roadbike) individual bicycle race. Everybody is welcome in this race. The more the merrier. Racers who skip a stage will not be allowed to continue. Everybody who finishes the race and does not skip a stage is a winner.

The race starts at the port municipality of Liloy, Zamboanga del Norte and rests in the historical city of Zamboanga del Norte, Dapitan City to end the first stage. The following day the race will continue from Dapitan City to Pagadian City to end the second stage. The 3rd stage will be from Pagadian to Ipil. And finally culminate with the final stage from Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay to Zamboanga City.

First Bicycle Race to cover the entire Zamboanga Peninsula

  • Due to the election complications in the Zamboanga peninsula, the tour has been postponed to July 11 - July 14 of 2013.

Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Zamboanga City.

  • First Stage - July 11, 2013 (Thursday): Liloy to Dapitan City
    • 143 Kilometers: This stage of the race does not have many hilly terrains. It will be mostly flat. The roads are cemented.
  • Second Stage - July 12, 2013(Friday): Dapitan City to Pagadian City
    • 128 Kilometers: The second stage will be more challenging as there will be more hills to climb. About 40% of the terrain will be hilly. It will be on the Osmena Hwy which is almost completely cemented. There are only a few kilometers that are still under construction.
  • Third Stage - July 13, 2013 (Saturday): Pagadian City to Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay
    • 139 Kilometers: The race from pagadian to Ipil will prove to be a grueling race specially the first 35 kilometers. The first 35 kilometers is about 80% uphill battle.
  • Fourth Stage - July 14, 2013 (Sunday): Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay to Divisoria, Zamboanga City
    • 130 Kilometers: There are three challenging parts to this section of the race. First challenge is the uphill climb from the border of zamboanga sibugay to the border of zamboanga city (barangay of licomo). After that is the twisty uphill in the barangay of Tigbalabag and finally the quiniput tuktukalaw climb. Then it will be a downhill race to the finish at the barangay of Divisoria.

CDA strengthens foundation of small coops

TUGUEGARAO CITY- The Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) Region 2 is conducting trainings and seminars to different established cooperatives to ensure strong foundation and to put them into mainstream of development.

Assistant Regional Director Artemio N. Guzman said to ensure a long-lasting cooperative, CDA requires all members to attend trainings and seminars they are conducting before issuance of registration and giving assistance to all types of cooperatives.

“We instill in them that cooperatives should withstand all circumstances to deliver the necessary services needed by their members and clients. We know all the fact that there are cooperatives that die a natural death but now, with the constant monitoring and trainings as well as some assistance to them, we try our very best to save the coops,” Guzman stated.

Part of training they are conducting is the organizational management among leaders and officers, capacity building, skills development, linkaging, and gainful operations of the cooperatives.

He explained that there are four categories of the cooperatives to include micro, small, medium and large cooperatives.

As of now, there are 746 total number of cooperatives region-wide to include the 10 large cooperatives with an asset of more than 100,000,0000; 65 medium with 15,000, 001 to 100,000,000; 124 small with 3,000,0001 to 15,000,000, and 547 micro coops with up to 3,000, 000 assets.
