History of Capiz, Philippines

Capiz became the second Spanish settlement after Cebu when Captain Diego de Artienda, sent by Legaspi landed in the town of Pan-ay and proclaimed it the capital of the province. The capital was then moved to the present location of Roxas City.

Folk history recorded in the Maragtas by Pedro Monteclaro says ten Bornean datus landed at a site now known as San Joaquin town in Iloilo province. They purchased Panay Island from the Aeta, cultivated the land, and renamed the island Madya-as. They divided it into three communities: Irong-irong, Akean (which includes the Capiz area), and Hamtik.

It is said that in Capiz in 1570, the Datu Bankaya’s wife of the Aklan district gave birth to twin daughters. Twin is "Kapid" in the local dialect, so the Spaniards adopted the name Capiz (Kapid) as inadvertently miscommunicated to them by the natives. Capiz, which was part of Aklan in pre-Spanish times, was one of the early settlements of the Malays, centuries before the coming of the Spaniards to the Philippines. It was part of the Confederation of Madjaas, formed after the purchase of Panay by the Bornean datus from the Negrito king named Marikudo.

When the Spaniards led by Miguel López de Legazpi came to Panay from Cebu in 1569, they found people with tattoos, and so they called it Isla de los Pintados. How the island itself came to be called Panay is uncertain. The Aeta called it Aninipay, after a plant that abounded in the island. Legend has it that López de Legazpi and his men, in search of food, exclaimed upon the island, pan hay en esta isla!. So they established their first settlement in the island at the mouth of the Banica River in Capiz and called it Pan-ay. This was the second Spanish settlement in the Philippines, the first being San Miguel, Cebu.

In the same year of 1569 Captain ('Capitan') Diego de Artieda who was sent by Legaspi landed in the Town of Panay and proclaimed it as the capital of the province. Later, they moved the Capital to its present site upon discovering the town of Capiz (not the province, and now Roxas City) which was near the sea and provided docking facilities.

In 1942, the region was occupied by the Japanese troops. In 1945, the region was liberated by the joint Filipino and American troops with Filipino guerrillas from the defeated Japanese Imperial forces during Second World War.

Capiz and Aklan were united under one province until April 25, 1956, when President Ramon Magsaysay signed into law Republic Act 1414 separating the two entities. (source verbatim from: www.capiz.gov.ph/)

We are using our rivers as our sewer system. If you ask a Filipino, "Are the Filipinos a clean people?" The answer is an automatic, "Yes!". However, the Filipinos are suffering from the same disease or attitude as most people do, and that is the "NIMBY" disease or "NIMBY" attitude. (NIMBY) Not In My Back Yard. So it is OK to dump my garbage and sewer there. Not mine! Someone else will take care of it.

Capiz, Philippines supports Philippine Cycling

Philippine Cycling is about cycling in the Philippnes. Philippine Cycling helps promote bike races, cycling clubs, bicycle tours, and the development of bicycle trails. Activities are coordinated with bike shops and cycling clubs throughout the Philippines to promote the fun of riding bikes. Philippine Cycling will be coordinating events with tour of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Road biking and mountain bikings will be promoted by Philippine Cycling.
Cycling Activity to Participate In

Tour de Zamboanga 2013: From the 11th of July, 2013 to the 14th of July, 2013. A four day 540 kilometer bicycle race for Charity!

Due to the road constructions going on in the route of the Tour, we are eliminating the road bikes from this race.
  • This is a (Non-Roadbike) individual bicycle race. Everybody is welcome in this race. The more the merrier. Racers who skip a stage will not be allowed to continue. Everybody who finishes the race and does not skip a stage is a winner.

The race starts at the port municipality of Liloy, Zamboanga del Norte and rests in the historical city of Zamboanga del Norte, Dapitan City to end the first stage. The following day the race will continue from Dapitan City to Pagadian City to end the second stage. The 3rd stage will be from Pagadian to Ipil. And finally culminate with the final stage from Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay to Zamboanga City.

First Bicycle Race to cover the entire Zamboanga Peninsula

  • Due to the election complications in the Zamboanga peninsula, the tour has been postponed to July 11 - July 14 of 2013.

Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Zamboanga City.

  • First Stage - July 11, 2013 (Thursday): Liloy to Dapitan City
    • 143 Kilometers: This stage of the race does not have many hilly terrains. It will be mostly flat. The roads are cemented.
  • Second Stage - July 12, 2013(Friday): Dapitan City to Pagadian City
    • 128 Kilometers: The second stage will be more challenging as there will be more hills to climb. About 40% of the terrain will be hilly. It will be on the Osmena Hwy which is almost completely cemented. There are only a few kilometers that are still under construction.
  • Third Stage - July 13, 2013 (Saturday): Pagadian City to Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay
    • 139 Kilometers: The race from pagadian to Ipil will prove to be a grueling race specially the first 35 kilometers. The first 35 kilometers is about 80% uphill battle.
  • Fourth Stage - July 14, 2013 (Sunday): Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay to Divisoria, Zamboanga City
    • 130 Kilometers: There are three challenging parts to this section of the race. First challenge is the uphill climb from the border of zamboanga sibugay to the border of zamboanga city (barangay of licomo). After that is the twisty uphill in the barangay of Tigbalabag and finally the quiniput tuktukalaw climb. Then it will be a downhill race to the finish at the barangay of Divisoria.

Roxas City turns 61

ROXAS CITY, Capiz- A simple but festive mood celebration will mark Roxas City’s 61st cityhood on May 12 this year.

City Tourism Officer Bryan Mari Argos said that a three-day food festival opened last May 10 evening at the Roxas City plaza for food and sound trippers in view of the celebration.

Local bands have been tapped to perform at the food festival which starts at sundown until midnight.

“Various oyster menus will be featured by participating stalls in the food festival as the city government has designed a contest on the delectable marine bivalve mollusks,” Argos stressed.

The contest dubbed “Talaba Culinaria” will end on May 12 with the awarding of winners.

Another oyster-based contest scheduled on May 12 at 5:00pm will be a competition for the fastest table preparation of the bivalve among men and women participants, respectively.

A traditional fireworks display will be staged on the last day of the food festival.

The city’s tourism czar also noted the city’s Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) federation led by its President Kriza Fernando has also organized some activities in time with the charter celebration.

Republic Act (RA) 603 otherwise known as the City Charter named the municipality of Capiz as Roxas City in honor of its most illustrious son, President Manuel Acuña Roxas.

The cityhood emanated from a bill for the creation of Roxas City, which was sponsored by then Rep. Ramon Arnaldo and was signed into law by President Elpidio Quirino on April 11, 1951, three years after Pres. Roxas died at 56.

Executive Order 438 issued by Pres. Quirino fixed the date of its charter on May 12, 1951.
