  • PSEi firms up over 7,000 as regional markets rebound

MANILA, Philippines — The local stock barometer strengthened its hold above the 7,000 mark on Monday, tracking a regional rebound following last week’s sell-down triggered by global growth jitters.

  • Barclays keeps Phl growth forecast at 6.5%

MANILA, Philippines - The strong inflows of remittances in August should continue supporting domestic consumption, but UK-based investment bank Barclays said it still sees this year’s economic growth decelerating to 6.5 percent from 2013 levels.
“Stable and sustained growth in remittances should continue to support domestic consumption. We maintain our 2014 GDP (gross domestic product) growth forecast at 6.5 percent,” the bank said in a research note ........................ Full Story»

VETERAN internationalist Joyette Jopson and celebrity first-timer Victor Basa turned in respectable finishes in their respective triathlon events recently, both drawing boost from Rudy Project gears that have become sought-after partners for triathletes here and abroad.
Jopson bucked the odds against a crack international field as she conquered the 180km bike event of the IronMan Langkawi, Malaysia and emerged the top Filipina finisher in the stage .............................. Full Story»

Frustration is growing at the slow pace of justice in the Philippines. The trials of those accused of murdering 34 journalists and two dozen others have dragged on for more than 500 days without any conclusive results.
The murders are often described as the worst single atrocity against journalists, and victims' families and media rights groups are demanding action from the Philippine government.
In the basement of the courthouse in Quezon City, part of the metro Manila region, Catholics pray for the souls of the departed. In courtrooms upstairs, doctors present grim evidence of how the victims were killed...Full Story »
