  • PH to ‘greatly benefit’ from IT trade accord

PHILIPPINE trade officials hailed the decision of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to eliminate the tariffs on a total of 201 products being manufactured under the information technology (IT) sector.
The decision follows an accord reached by 54 WTO members last July 18 and was confirmed in a meeting held last July 24 at the WTO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Officials of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said the accord will greatly benefit the Philippines ........ Full Story»

The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced that the Philippines and Vietnam agreed on a collaborative research and development (R&D) program to promote more efficient rice farming systems and technologies.
DA assistant secretary for planning and project development, Orlan Calayag said that the agreement also covers enhancement of research and training facilities for both countries with an overall goal to reduce post-harvest losses ........ Full Story»

MANILA, Philippines - Anita Koykka came through with record lifts while fellow Ormoc City bets Leticia Mangcao and Regie Ramirez topped their respective classes in the Asian Powerlifting Championships at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Hong Kong recently.
Koykka, considered as the strongest woman in the country, set new marks in squat (140 kg), (benchpress (65 kg) and deadlift (165 kg) to lead the Philippines campaign in the five-day event ................................ Full Story»

Frustration is growing at the slow pace of justice in the Philippines. The trials of those accused of murdering 34 journalists and two dozen others have dragged on for more than 500 days without any conclusive results.
The murders are often described as the worst single atrocity against journalists, and victims' families and media rights groups are demanding action from the Philippine government.
In the basement of the courthouse in Quezon City, part of the metro Manila region, Catholics pray for the souls of the departed. In courtrooms upstairs, doctors present grim evidence of how the victims were killed...Full Story »
