Geography of Santander, Cebu, Philippines

The town is 3,567 hectares of land, characterized by a rugged terrain with an average elevation of 200 meters.

Some 34 percent of Santander, mostly found in the coastal areas, have gentle slopes which are highly suitable for either agriculture or industrial uses. Thirty-one percent is hilly land and thus require heavy cultivation for crops to grow. The rest of the areas are best for forestry. The bulk of Santander’s land area, at 75.71 percent, is alienable and disposable while 24.29 percent is timberland.

About Santander, Cebu, Philippines

Santander has overcome the setbacks of being farthest from the seat of government in Cebu City. Located at Cebu island’s southernmost tip, Santander serves as Cebu’s gateway by providing an accessible connection to and from neighboring places such as Dumaguete City in Negros and Siquijor.

Gone was the monopoly that gripped the town, and now there are at least three seaports where one could get a 15-minute boat ride from Santander to Negros island. Passengers are not the only ones being served by the town’s ports as bigger, roll-on roll-off sea vessels are also available to cater to traders’ goods.

Violent incidents have been a part of Santander’s long history. But these have been relegated to remain just that- a part of history. This is because tourists are now enjoying the peace in the town with its white sand beaches and clear seas and beautiful night skies. Slowly deviating from its mainly agriculture-based economy, more than 11 tourism resorts can now be found in Santander, and most are reasonably priced so even ordinary workers could afford a couple of days’ stay on the beach away from the city.

Santander’s image has also transformed with the changing of the town’s leaders in 2001. When before Santander was identified with child labor and destructive means of fishing, Santander officials today are advocates for marine and coastal resources protection. Resorts have diving facilities, and marine life flourishes at a sanctuary in Barangay Pasil. There’s a plan to add one more marine sanctuary in the town, as local law enforcement authorities continue to be vigilant in their drive against commercial and destructive ways of fishing.

With an economy based on sustainable fishing, farming, trading and tourism, Santander is well on its way to a development that is balanced and nondestructive to its environment.

Considering the many changes this faraway town has achieved in this decade, those who knew the dark Santander of the past are in for many pleasant surprises.

Location of Santander, Cebu, Philippines

Santander is is one of the municipalities in the province of Cebu in the Region VII area within the Central Visayays islands.

Santander lies 134.14 kilometers south of Cebu City, next to Oslob town. It is the town at Cebu island’s southernmost tip, with the Tanon Strait in its east and the Cebu Strait on the west. Next to Santander is the municipality of Samboan.

Santander is also only a few minutes away from Dumaguete City in Negros. A port in Tampi, Amlan Negros Oriental serves barges, ferryboats and fastcrafts connecting to Talisay in Santander. Two ports in Liloan, Santander also serves pumpboats and barges going to Sibulan, Negros Oriental.

History of Santander, Cebu, Philippines

Article is from the LGU of Santander Cebu

During the Spanish period, Santander was under the Immaculate Concepcion Parish in Oslob, Cebu. Local folks had to walk 18 kilometers to attend mass. Because of this distance, the people requested that another church be constructed and this was completed in 1898.

Originally, the Santander church faced the sea but this was changed in 1960 to face the road for the convenience of the church goers.

Taking into consideration, the distance from Santander to Oslob, the people requested the construction of a church. It was completed in 1898 and named it Saint Gabriel the Archangel Parish Church.

The church of Santander not only serves as a place for religious veneration. This church, one of two in Cebu with their backs to the sea, is also a symbol of its people’s awakening that led Santander to where it is today.

The Santander church was a refuge for its people in times of political persecution during the early 2000s, its priest vocal in being vanguards in the protection of its flock’s rights and interests. The Santander church was vital in winning the battle that freed Santander from the decades-long iron grip of its previous leaders and had its share of space in local newspaper reports because of it.

Santander is the only town in Cebu province with St. Gabriel the Archangel as patron, known as the messenger of God. The town’s fiesta is celebrated in the month of April. It is said that when his image is taken out for procession, rain will fall even on a sunny day.

Protect the environment

It is sad but true that as of the year 2012 the rivers of the Philippines continue to be the #1 Sewer Systems of the Philippines.

Protect & Save the Rivers. Do not let your sewer drain into the river. Your community can be the first to initiate this project.
Build your riverbank protection with a built-in gutter system. Reforest within Ten Years - Guaranteed!

Let us plant more trees in every barangay in the entire Philippines. It does not make any difference if the barangay is urban, partially urban or rural; we need more trees. Trees will prevent erosion, provide oxygen, prevent green house effect, and even a place of business for the shade tree mechanic.

The Philippines is a tropical country and practically anything will grow. The DENR has the planting trees project that goes on every year. Lots of picture taking for the media. Planting trees one by one is the "human" way of doing it. This individual planting of trees is good if done to "line" the roads and highways with trees or along fences or property divisions, or if you have a plantation.

To reforest the nation of the Philippines we have to plant trees the "mother nature" way. Sow the seeds during the rainy season. Go deep into "bald" forests and plant trees by sowing seeds. If there's not enough volunteers to do this, use the military helicopters to fly over the designated areas and sow the seeds.

Guaranteed within a few years, The Philippines will be lush again. >>Read More

We are using our rivers as our sewer system. If you ask a Filipino, "Are the Filipinos a clean people?" The answer is an automatic, "Yes!". However, the Filipinos are suffering from the same disease or attitude as most people do, and that is the "NIMBY" disease or "NIMBY" attitude. (NIMBY) Not In My Back Yard. So it is OK to dump my garbage and sewer there. Not mine! Someone else will take care of it.

This attitude is killing our rivers. Your great-grandparents, grandparents or parents were once proud to tell the stories of how they enjoyed swimming in the river behind your house or nearby. However, you can't say the same or tell the same stories to your kids or grand kids. Why? Because your generation is killing the river.

We have so much water in the Philippines and yet very little to drink.

Instead of relying too much on Diesel fuel and Coal to generate the majority of Philippine's Electrical energy Supply, we can concentrate more on renewable and sustainable source of energy such as: Hydro Power, Solar Power, and Wind Power. We have too many black outs.
