Zambo Norte celebrates 55th founding anniversary
By Franklin P. Gumapon

Dipolog City (6 June) -- The province of Zamboanga del Norte is exactly 55 years old today. With this, the provincial government headed by reelected governor Rolando E. Yebes has lined up a number of activities for a weeklong celebration which started last June 1.

A colorful costume parade featuring the different tribes inhabiting the province formally opened the weeklong festivity last Friday. The tribes represented in the parade were Boholano, Cebuano, Negrense, Chinese, Maranao, Kalibugan, Tausog, Samal, Siquijodnon, Ilonggo and Subanen.

All the 25 municipalities also came to the provincial capital of Dipolog City for the celebration, setting up their own booths filled with a variety of agricultural and fish products. There were on display fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh and dried fish, rice wine locally known as “pangasi,” and many others. Sports activities also capped the celebration like sky diving competition, golf tournament, motocross competition and off-road competition. The provincial government also gave recognition to employees who have been in government service for 25 years or more.

An anniversary bonus of three thousand pesos to each regular and casual employee with plantilla was likewise given. On June 8 the provincial government is going to host a "balikbayan" fellowship night right at the Capitol grounds as a tribute to Filipino overseas workers. In support of the weeklong celebration, the local office of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has also scheduled a two-day jobs fair on June 7-8 to job seekers in the province.

The weeklong festivity shall wrap up June 9. Zamboanga del Norte was carved out of the former Zamboanga province on June 6, 1952. Today the province is known as most peaceful province in the entire Zamboanga peninsula. (PIA)
