ILOILO City – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 6 lauded the city government here for being friendly to the elderly.

“What Iloilo City has done is commendable. It used its own resources to help the elderly,” said Judith Tanate, focal person for the elderly, during the recent Senior Citizens Congress here.

According to Tanate, the city government adopted the national government’s scheme of providing pension for the elderly by serving more senior citizens.

“We hope that more local government units will follow,” said Tanate.

Under its own social pension program, Iloilo City provides a stipend of P500 per semester to each of the identified 5,000 eligible senior citizens here.

A total of P5 million is allotted every year.

Eligible are elderly who are not catered by DSWD, 65 years old and above, not receiving pension or regular support from immediate relatives.
