Drug dealer slain in shootout in Dipolog City

ZAMBOANGA CITY (PNA) -- A suspected drug dealer was killed in a shootout with lawmen the province of Zamboanga del Norte, a police official disclosed Monday (July 4).

Senior Supt. Edwin Wagan, Zamboanga del Norte police director, identified the slain drug dealer as Genesis Jabonila, 21, alias Bunso, a resident of Barangay Sta. Filomena, Dipolog City, the capital of the province.

Wagan said the shootout took place around 9:30 p.m. Sunday at the Sunset Boulevard, Barangay Sta. Cruz, Dipolog City.

Prior to the shootout, Wagan said Jabonilla agreed to sell a heat-sealed plastic sachet of methamphetamine hydrochloride locally known as shabu to an undercover agent of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and a confidential informant.

He said the suspect, upon sensing the presence of lawmen, changed the venue of transaction from a gasoline station in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Dapitan City to a restaurant and bar at Sunset Boulevard, Barangay Sta. Cruz, Dipolog City.

He said the suspect suddenly ran towards the cottage of Jalapadan Beach during their transaction at the Sunset Boulevard upon sensing the persons he was dealing with are government agents.

He added that Jabonilla drew a handgun and open fire but missed his target prompting the undercover PDEA agent to return fire hitting the suspect.

He said Jabonilla was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

He said the PDEA agent and policemen recovered from the crime scene a caliber .45 pistol with a magazine of ammunition, undetermined volume of alleged “shabu,” and cash believed to be proceeds of the suspect in the trade of prohibited drugs.
