- The province of Ilocos Norte is within Region I
- Ilocos Norte is located on the northernmost edge of western Luzon. Its boundaries are formed by the Babuyan Channel on the north and its sister province, Ilocos Norte, on the south. To the west are the tribulent waters of the South China Sea, while the eastern borders are formed by part of the Cagayan Valley, Abra and the Mountain Province. A well-paved coastal highway connects the province with the rest of the country.
History of Ilocos Norte, Philippines
Long before the coming of the Spaniards, there already existed an extensive region (consisting of the present provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra and La Union) renowned for its gold mines. Merchants from Japan and China would often visit the area to trade gold with beads, ceramics and silk. The inhabitants of the region, believed to be of Malay origin, called their place "samtoy", from "sao mi toy", which literally meant "our language here"
In 1591, when the Spanish conquistadors had Manila more or less under their control, they began looking for new sites to conquer. Legaspi's grandson, Juan De Salcedo, volunteered to lead one of these expeditions. Together with 8 armed boats and 45 men, the 22 year old voyager headed north. On June 13, 1592, Salcedo and his men landed in Vigan and then proceeded towards Laoag, Currimao and Badoc. As they sailed along the coast, they were surprised to see numerous sheltered coves ("looc") where the locals lived in harmony. As a result, they named the region "Ylocos" and its people "Ylocanos".
As the Christianization of the region grew, so did the landscape of the area. Vast tracks of land were utilized for churches and bell towers in line with the Spanish mission of "bajo las campanas". In the town plaza, it was not uncommon to see garrisons under the church bells. The colonization process was slowly being carried out.
The Spanish colonization of the region, however, was never completely successful. Owing to the abusive practices of many Augustinian friars, a number of Ilocanos revolted against their colonizers. Noteworthy of these were the Dingras uprising (1589) and Pedro Almasan revolt (San Nicolas, 1660). In 1762, Diego Silang led a series of battles aimed at freeing the Ilocanos from the Spanish yoke. When he died from an assassin's bullet, his widow Gabriela continued the cause. Unfortunately, she too was captured and hanged. In 1807, the sugar cane ("basi") brewers of Piddig rose up in arms to protest the government's monopoly of the wine industry. In 1898, the church excommunicated Gregorio Aglipay for refusing to cut off ties with the revolutionary forces of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. Unperturbed, he established the "Iglesia Filipina Independiente". Aglipay’s movement and the nationalist sentiment it espoused helped restore the self-respect of many Filipinos.
In an effort to gain more political control and because of the increasing population of the region, a Royal Decree was signed on February 2, 1818 splitting Ilocos into two provinces: Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur. Soon thereafter, the provinces of La Union and Abra likewise became independent.

Economy of Ilocos Norte, Philippines
- Agriculture is the main source of livelihood in the province, all lands for cultivation can be planted with rice, corn, garlic, onion, sugarcane, tobacco, and cotton. Ilocos Norte is also noted for its various cottage industries, among which are cloth weaving, pottery-making, blacksmithing, woodcarving and furniture making. Its ethnic population is overwhelmingly Ilocano. Unlike the rest of the region, however, the Roman Catholic Church does not predominate. The Aglipayan Church, Iglesia ni Cristo, and other Protestant groups have strong followings, as well as, animism and non-religiosity. The climate is characterized by two extremes: very dry from December to April and very wet for the rest of the year. The average temperature in Ilocos Norte is 81 deg F. Planting trees one by one is the "human" way of doing it. This individual planting of trees is good if done to "line" the roads and highways with trees or along fences or property divisions, or if you have a plantation.
To reforest the nation of the Philippines we have to plant trees the "mother nature" way. Sow the seeds during the rainy season. Go deep into "bald" forests and plant trees by sowing seeds. If there's not enough volunteers to do this, use the military helicopters to fly over the designated areas and sow the seeds.

We are using our rivers as our sewer system. If you ask a Filipino, "Are the Filipinos a clean people?" The answer is an automatic, "Yes!". However, the Filipinos are suffering from the same disease or attitude as most people do, and that is the "NIMBY" disease or "NIMBY" attitude. (NIMBY) Not In My Back Yard. So it is OK to dump my garbage and sewer there. Not mine! Someone else will take care of it.
This attitude is killing our rivers. Your great-grandparents, grandparents or parents were once proud to tell the stories of how they enjoyed swimming in the river behind your house or nearby. However, you can't say the same or tell the same stories to your kids or grand kids. Why? Because your generation is killing the river.

Festivals, Fiestas and Traditions of Ilocos Norte, Philippines
In the Philippines a fiesta is usually celebrated in barrios or barangays. It is the official holiday of the LGU, the barangay. Filipinos love fiestas. It is a time for joy and celebration. A fiesta is of Spanish origin and is usually commemorated in association with a christian patron saint. Most barangays whose population have been clustered by Muslims(Moros) and their population is more than that of the Christians, the celebration of the fiesta have been cancelled and replaced with the Hari Raya or Eid al-Fitr.
The cities or municipalities usually have yearly festivals where all the barangays participate. The cities or municipalities hold contests for the best floats in parades.

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte- Experience Ilocano pride at the 5th OTOP Summer Trade Fair and Garden Show in Laoag City, this province.
Among the products on sale are One-Town, One-Product (OTOP) of the different municipalities of the province which include, among others, mouth-watering longganiza and empanada from Batac City; chichacorn from Paoay; seaweed noodles from Burgos; vinegar and basi from Laoag City; rice coffee from Banna; Ceramics and crispy-licious Chicharon or Bagnet from San Nicolas; binakol abel from the loom weavers of Sarrat, and shell craft from the artisans of Pagudpud.
Other products featured at the trade fair are furniture and home furnishings, gift items and plants.
According to Maricor Racela of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the trade fair “aims to promote local products not only from Ilocos Norte but also from the other provinces in the Ilocandia, especially the OTOP of the various local government units of the province.”
The OTOP is a government program that supports small and medium entrepreneurs and LGUs to develop their products and at the same time market them.
“There are 40 exhibitors, of which some came from Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan, La Union and Abra. Trade fairs like this help them market their products,” Racela said.
The trade fair will run from until May 18, 2012 at the Dap-ayan in front of the Provincial Capitol.
It is a project of the DTI, in partnership with the Partuat ti Kailokuan Association, City Government of Laoag and the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte.
