ILOILO CITY, July 15 (PNA) -- The city government today kicked off its month-long celebration of the 79th year of the declaration of Iloilo City as a Charter City with a mass and a short opening program attended by employees of the city hall.

“It’s a simple celebration with all the activities being prepared by our tourism office,” mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said.

The lineup of activities included the delivery of social services, such as dental mission, mass wedding, sports festivities, photo exhibit showing the city’s rich culture and heritage, recognition of outstanding employees, debate, oratorical, extemporaneous contests and quiz bee, among others.

A civic parade will be held in the morning of August 25. It will be participated by city hall employees, national government agencies (NGAs), schools, non-government organizations (NGOs) and barangays.

“We are enjoining everyone to celebrate the city’s charter which gives us a sense of ownership of our city and identity as Ilonggos,” stressed Mabilog.

Mabilog first institutionalized the Charter Day celebration when he became mayor in 2010.

Iloilo, as a chartered city, was formally inaugurated on August 25, 1937 after the surrounding municipalities of La Paz, Mandurriao, Molo and Arevalo were merged with the progressive town of Iloilo on July 16, 1937, by virtue of Commonwealth Act No.158.
